UROTHELIAL CELLS

Initially we have focused on reconstruction of the urethra. We have shown that urothelial cells can be obtained from bladderwash and stimulated to form colonies and proliferate to a continuous urothelial mucosa in vitro. Furthermore, we have developed methods to transfer the cultured urothelium to the patient by the use of a biodegradable matrix. These methods are presently used when performing femal- to-male gender surgery at Linköping University Hospital and we are aiming to expand these methods to be used in patients with hypospadia.
